How many times have you or a loved one nearly fallen off the ladder while frantically and annoyingly pulling disgusting piles of glop out of your gutters? Cleaning your gutters and downspouts is a thankless chore, not to mention a dangerous one. Clogged gutters can cause water to back up, damaging your siding and fascia, ruining your landscaping and causing erosion.

A common pest across Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC are mosquitoes. Our area is actually home to almost 60 different breeds of mosquitoes. Besides causing an itchy bump, mosquito bites can also spread disease malaria, yellow fever, and West Nile virus. For the first time in nearly 50 years, endemic cases of dengue fever and malaria are in the United States.

Summer in the mid-Atlantic can be brutal, with scorching heat and heavy downpours. How are your gutters holding up to all the summer thunderstorms? If you have gutter screens, they're probably not operating at peak performance.

When leaves, twigs and storm debris pile up on your roof and those gutter screens clog, the gutters are unable to effectively carry rainwater off your roof and away from your home.

Cleaning your gutters and downspouts is a thankless chore, not to mention a dangerous one. But for most homeowners it’s a necessity. Clogged gutters can cause water to back up, ultimately damaging your siding and fascia. Clogged or overflowing gutters can harm your landscaping and cause erosion. Water can eventually seep down along your foundation, even finding its way into your basement.

The best solution is one like the Thompson Creek Gutter System, which completely encloses and protects your gutters. There are no vertical openings for leaves and debris to enter and no screens to clog. Rainwater flows over and around the nose of the gutter system, into your gutters and swiftly though your downspouts. Our gutters offer protection against the elements with our exclusive high back system with eight flow reducers, preventing unwanted overflow and completely protecting the fascia.  And it makes cleaning gutters a thing of the past!

Wet or damp basements are a common problem in homes. Wet basements create mold, mildew, and ruin flooring and wall materials. It’s easy for water to find its way into your basement, merely from gravity – water flows down hill and along your foundation, stopping when it hits the basement. The wet soil all along the outside of your foundation walls creates pressure, finding its way through the smallest crack, or worse yet, the pressure creates its own cracks in the wall. Often homeowners will turn to more expensive fixes such as waterproofing the entire basement, which requires extensive excavation and landscape repairs.

But before deciding on such an expensive fix, the source of the water in your basement should be identified, possibly offering a much cheaper solution. Ground water can seep through floors and foundations due to heavy rain or seasonal run-off, or it could be constant water seepage. Often the source of this water is your home’s gutters and downspouts.

Gutters can overflow because of excessive rainfall, clogging from leaves or debris. Improper installation, for example, can cause draining from the second floor gutters into the first floor gutters, overflowing them. Sometimes homeowners install gutters in one or two locations but not all the way around the house. This causes an overload of water into your gutters which cannot drain away from your house properly. Water problems can also be caused by disconnected downspouts or downspouts that aren't long enough to direct water away from the house.

So before deciding to undertake an expensive basement waterproofing project, first check your gutters and downspouts to make sure they aren’t causing your wet basement problems.

Does your yard seem to collect more rainwater than the other homes in your neighborhood? The cause of this could be your gutters. A gutter system consists not only of the gutters that run along the roof of your home, but the downspouts that direct water away from your home. Having properly installed downspouts is imperative during the summer months where Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC experience unexpected summer storms that pop up along the mid-Atlantic region.

The Thompson Creek Gutter System is design and installed with downspouts measuring 3"x4" that maximize carrying water off your roof and away from your home efficiently. Our staff works to design the downspout placement to move rainwater quickly and efficiently away from your home. This means that your yard and landscaping is protected from erosion, and your basement will stay dry. Even better, the complete system is backed by our double lifetime guarantee.

Stop worrying about whether or not your yard in going to be washed away with the next big storm that rolls through by calling Thompson Creek today.

Your home’s gutters are overhead and generally out of sight. You should take the time to inspect your rain gutters and downspouts to ensure rainwater is flowing freely to properly route water away from your home.

Once gutters clog, they can continue to fill up with leaves and debris. Seeds are part of the tree debris that can clog gutters and turn them into gutter gardens.

But you don’t have to climb a ladder and risk your safety to ensure your gutters are clear and free flowing. The Thompson Creek gutter system completely encloses your gutters, so the only thing flowing through them is water. This gutter system keeps rainwater moving properly through your gutters and to the downspouts. Thompson Creek gutters are guaranteed never to clog or pull away from your home, eliminating the need for you to climb a ladder to clean your gutters.

Clogged gutters cause a multitude of problems, ranging from foundation damage and driveway damage to mold and mildew. When your gutters clog, water backs up and goes wherever it can. This can mean major damage to your homes fascia, or outside wall. Making its way down the side of your home, water seeps into the foundation causing hidden damage not visible from the outside. Clogged gutters can not only cause damage on your home’s exterior but also to the interior. It is possible for water to continue down along your foundation and into your basement causing structural damage and expensive solutions. Mold and mildew breed in the soggy leaves and debris in clogged gutters causing a serious safety issue for your family.

Before having to deal with major damage and expense caused by clogged gutters over time, replace your gutters with the Thompson Creek Gutter System, which completely encloses and protects your gutters.

Heavy spring showers and storms are already in full swing. In homes with clogged gutters or downspouts, foundation damage is the single biggest problem. Ground erosion allows rain water to work its way to the foundation, creating structural damage. If your home develops foundation damage, you're faced with a very costly repair. The uneven settling of the house or damage to part of the foundation can also compromise the plumbing and electrical systems and cause settling and cracks on solid surfaces such as sidewalks and driveways. In addition, you're looking at tens of thousands of dollars deducted from the resale value of your home.

An efficient and properly maintained gutter system channels rainwater off your roof and away from your home's foundation. You'll also have the added benefit of avoiding the damage created by ordinary rain gutters that are easily clogged with leaves, twigs, granules from shingles and other debris that cause overflow and more costly damage.

The best solution is one like the Thompson Creek Gutter System, which completely encloses and protects your gutters. There are no vertical openings for leaves and debris to enter and no screens to clog. Rainwater flows over and around the nose of the gutter system, into your gutters and swiftly though your downspouts.

Often the source of this water is your home’s gutters.  Gutters can overflow because of excessive rainfall, clogging from leaves or debris. Gutter screens or gutter covers easily become clogged and overflow.

Cleaning gutters and downspouts is a thankless chore, not to mention a dangerous one.  But for most homeowners it’s a necessity.  Clogged gutters can cause water to back up, ultimately damaging your siding and fascia.  Clogged or overflowing gutters can harm your landscaping and cause erosion.  Water can eventually seep down along your foundation, even finding its way into your basement and making it damp.

What about covering your gutters with a gutter screen?  When snow and ice pile up on your roof and gutters, the gutters are unable to carry the melting water off your roof, through the downspouts and away from your home.  And in the fall, leaves and debris can easily clog the mesh of gutter screens.  The same holds true for springtime tree flower buds and seeds falling and clogging the screens.

The best solution is one like the Thompson Creek Gutter System, which completely encloses and protects your gutters.  There are no vertical openings for leaves and debris to enter and no screens to clog.  Rainwater and melting snow and ice flow over and around the nose of the gutter system, into your gutters and swiftly though your downspouts.  Our gutters offer protection against the elements with our exclusive high back system with eight flow reducers, preventing unwanted overflow and completely protecting the fascia.

In homes with clogged gutters or downspouts, foundation damage is the single biggest problem.  Ground erosion allows rain water to work its way to the foundation, creating structural damage.  If your home develops foundation damage, you’re faced with a very costly repair.  The uneven settling of the house or damage to part of the foundation can also compromise the plumbing and electrical systems and cause settling and cracks on solid surfaces such as sidewalks and driveways.  In addition, you’re looking at tens of thousands of dollars deducted from the resale value of your home.

An efficient and properly maintained gutter system channels rainwater off your roof and away from your home’s foundation.  You’ll also have the added benefit of avoiding the damage created by ordinary rain gutters that are easily clogged with leaves, twigs, granules from shingles and other debris that cause overflow and more costly damage.

Non-existent, leaky or poorly-installed gutters can not only damage a home’s exterior paint job, but also its structural integrity.  This allows water to penetrate and damage the fascia, soffit or the actual framing of the house, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

A properly constructed and maintained gutter system reduces mold, mildew, oxidation, dry-rot and insect infestation in and around your home – including your basement, foundation and crawl spaces.

An efficient rain gutter system will not only channel water away from your home but you’ll avoid the damage created by ordinary rain gutters that are easily clogged with leaves, twigs, granules from shingles and other debris that cause overflow and more costly damage.

Many gutters are installed using a spike and ferrule technique.  The spikes are essentially big nails that are driven through the front of the gutter.  The spike goes through an aluminum sleeve (the ferrule), through the rear of the gutter, and into the fascia board.

The problem with spike and ferrule gutters is that they work themselves loose over time due to the expansion and contraction of the fascia board, as well as the weight of the water running through the rain gutters and downspouts.  When the spikes pull loose, the gutters will pull away from the house.  Clogged gutters fill up with rain water and the additional weight puts unnecessary strain on the spike and ferrule mounting system.

This creates the possibility of water getting behind the gutter system and into the fascia board, compounding the problem.

The picture below shows a loose spike and gutter installation, with the gutter pulling away from the house.  You can see the wood rot on the fascia board that supports the gutter.

Spike and Ferrule

As a result, the fascia board needs to be replaced, and an efficient gutter protection system needs to be installed to protect the home from the elements.

Clogged gutters and downspouts in his Alexandria, VA home are what drove Alfred to contact Thompson Creek.  He had 50 year old rain gutters and needed to clean them 3-4 times per year so that rain water could be properly routed from his home.  We installed Thompson Creek gutters on his Virginia home to solve the problem.

Clogged rain gutters and downspouts can cause wet basements, wood rot, mold and mildew and landscape erosion not to mention the risks of ladder injuries from cleaning out gutters.

Alfred also had Thompson Creek install energy efficient replacement windows in his Virginia home.  He will be able to claim the 30% tax credit on the installation of his Thompson Creek windows

When asked where he was most satisfied with his maintenance-free gutter, Alfred replied, “I was satisfied with everything, they knew what they were doing and they did a good job.  I am very satisfied with the workmanship and the product.”  When asked why he chose Thompson Creek, he replied “I did some research and talked to a couple of people who have used them and thought they sounded like a good company.”

If you have problems with your rain gutters, simply putting a gutter cover on them is a bad idea.  Many gutter covers are made of screens, vinyl, or flimsy aluminum.  Gutter screens will clog.  This picture shows a gutter screen with leaves underneath it which leads to clogged gutters and downspouts

Gutter Cover

Some gutter covers come with an unsupported hood and a poor end cap system.  The end cap is critical in a gutter system.  The lack of a good end cap can allow birds, and other animals to nest in your gutters.  The majority of service issues in the gutter protection industry come from leaky end caps, nests or critters.

Make sure that you use a company that has a one piece self seating end cap to help prevent these problems.  This picture shows a one piece self seating end cap.

When you are considering replacing your gutters, you may come across terminology during your research that may get confusing.  Fascia, soffit, ferrules, pitch – what does it all mean?  Here are some of the more common terms you may come across.

Fascia:  Also referred to as fascia board, fascia is a type of roof trim mounted on the exposed ends of rafters or the top of exterior walls to create a layer between the edge of the roof and the outside, protecting the roof and the interior of the house from weather damage.  Fascia board can be vulnerable to water damage, leading to rot which can spread to the rafters and roofing materials.

Cap:  Although not always necessary, the fascia board can be capped to protect it from the battering of wind, rain, snow, heat and humidity.

Soffit:  The underside of the roof overhang or porch ceiling that covers the rafter bottoms. This horizontal surface usually has vents to allow air into the attic.

Hanger:  A flat strap installed under the roofing material that holds up the horizontal section of the gutter.

Spike and Ferrule:  Another method to attach gutters to a home using a metal tube that is placed inside the gutter to strengthen it and keep it from bending. The spike is driven through the face of the gutter at the top, through the ferrule and into the wood fascia board. Spike and ferrule hangers tend to pull out of the wood over time which can cause the gutters to sag.

Pitch:  The angle at which a horizontal section of gutter is tilted in order to force water to flow toward a downspout.

Run:  Length of a horizontal section of gutter.

Splash guard:  A plastic or concrete surface put under a downspout to direct water away from the house.

By Thompson Creek on 9/6/2010 7:00 PM

Gutters are overhead and generally out of sight.  Take the time to inspect your rain gutters and downspouts to ensure that they are free flowing to properly route water away from your home.

Once gutters clog, they are prone to filling up with leaves and debris.  Seeds are part of the tree debris that can clog gutters, and turn them into gutter gardens.  You don’t have to climb a ladder and risk your safety to ensure your gutters are clear and free flowing.

The Thompson Creek gutter system encloses your gutters keeping rain water free flowing.  This gutter system is guaranteed never to clog or pull away from your home eliminating the need for you to climb a ladder to clean you gutters.

Are your gutters pitched properly?  Proper installation is a major factor in the overall performance of rain gutters.  The gutters should be pitched properly so that water flows down hill and flows through to the downspouts.  This will help to eliminate standing water in your gutters, which can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes in the summer time.  A properly pitched gutter will also help to route water away from your home.  As you can see in the picture below, rain water will have a hard time making its way up hill and through this downspout.

All Thompson Creek gutters are installed by professional applicators and guaranteed never to clog, and will never pull away from your home.

Gutters are often overlooked because they are above your head, and out of sight.  It is important that your rain gutters are clear so that water can be properly routed away from your home.  Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause numerous problems for your home including wet basements, cracked foundations, damp ceilings, wall damage, mold, mildew and insect infestation.

Cleaning your gutters is dangerous.  According to a study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, more than 2.1 million people were treated in US emergency rooms for ladder accidents from 1990 to 2005.  And during the study period, the number of incidents continued to rise, going up about 50 percent in 2005 compared with 1990.
