Now that 2011 has come to an end, we’d like to take few moments to review the past year and make some resolutions that we think you might want to borrow for yourself. And don’t worry – this is not a top ten list. It’s not even a top five. We are realistic when it comes to resolutions. We want to make sure we can keep them all. So we kept our list to three. It’s an easy number for you to add to your list.

Delegate. Delegate. Then delegate some more. In business we’re always told to delegate more. We’ve learned over the past year that business is booming and we are busy so it’s time to delegate more. As such we’ve created more service and project management positions, increased and streamlined production, and hired more install crews. This way we can spend time creating better products– and feel confident that the right teams are installing those products in your homes. How does this resolution translate to you? Any manufacturing facility is going to have scraps left after the product is manufactured, and Thompson Creek Window Company is no exception.  But what is done with that waste can make a difference to our environment. 

From the start of the manufacturing process, Thompson Creek works to minimize scrap.  Our manufacturing process utilizes computer-aided raw material optimization programs, designed to maximize raw material yield and minimize scrap. When building our vinyl replacement windows, our yield rate averages 90% and the 10% scrap we generate is recycled. We recycle also glass, vinyl and aluminum. In 2010 alone, Thompson Creek recycled 101,925 pounds of vinyl from our manufacturing facility in Landover, MD.  97% of this vinyl was able to be reused for other products such as vinyl fences and vinyl gutters. As a local manufacturer, we want to protect our area from having excess materials being dumped in landfills, polluting Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC.

Local Manufacturer/Installer Experiences Impressive Growth in a Challenging Economy

Thompson Creek Window Company hosted a visit from President Obama this morning at its manufacturing facility in Landover, Maryland, which was the site of the President’s remarks to the media about the economy, comment on the monthly employment report and make economic personnel announcements. 

Thompson Creek President Rick Wuest said, “It was definitely an honor and a change of pace for us to host the President and the White House Press Corps.  Being selected by the White House as the location for announcements on the economy is exciting for all of our employees, and being showcased as a company that is able to thrive in these challenging conditions is validation of our hard work that has created a lot of jobs and kept us on a strong growth path.”

Thompson Creek employs a staff of 289 people at two locations: the manufacturing plant and distribution center in Landover, Maryland, and corporate headquarters and administrative offices in Lanham, Maryland. Having received numerous industry awards, including being named 2010 Replacement Contractor of the Year by Replacement Contractor magazine and a 2008 Torch Award winner for Marketplace Ethics from the Better Business Bureau, Thompson Creek has achieved double-digit growth over the past 10 years, including revenue growth of more than 50 percent last year.

While many similar companies are struggling, the reason for this impressive growth, according to Wuest, can be attributed to multiple factors.  He said, “In addition to manufacturing and installing the best product on the market today, along with talented sales, marketing and support departments being able to proactively adapt to change has been instrumental in our growth.”  This includes changes in technology, manufacturing practices, sales methodology, customer service and employee recognition programs.  Another factor that has contributed to their growth was the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).  The Act offered tax credits for homeowners who upgrade their home’s windows and doors to more energy-efficient products.  Thompson Creek was able to benefit from the homeowner tax credits, which contributed to the sales growth they experienced. 

As a result of this growth, Thompson Creek has continued to hire new employees over the last few years.  The number of employees doubled from 2008 to 2010, and by the end of 2010 they employed a workforce of close to 300, a number that is expected to grow to more than 400 in 2011.

Thompson Creek Window Company has always believed in giving back to the community, participating in causes such as the Susan B. Komen Foundation and Habitat for Humanity.  For the upcoming holiday season, Thompson Creek decided to collect toys to be delivered to children being treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. 

Beginning in November, Thompson Creek began collecting toys. For over a month, employees purchased toys that were on the wish list, which were collected in large wrapped boxes throughout their corporate office and factory in Landover, MD.  Several employees and departments also made monetary donations.  In addition to the numerous large boxes that employees filled with toys, over $1,100.00 was donated and used to purchase additional gifts.

On Friday, December 17, Shelly Bauer and warehouse workers filled a Thompson Creek truck full of toys, which they personally delivered to John Hopkins Hospital.  The generosity of Thompson Creek employees embodies the true spirit of the season!

 

 

Thompson Creek Window Company has been a supporter of the Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity for the last few years.  Habitat for Humanity was created to engage individuals and communities in the good work of eliminating poverty housing and lift families out of poverty through homeownership.

Thompson Creek firmly believes in Habitat for Humanity’s mission to provide new housing for needy families.  In support of their efforts, Thompson Creek recently made another delivery of vinyl replacement windows to Habitat for Humanity.

On October 3, 2010, Thompson Creek Window Company participated for the third straight year in the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Race for the Cure held in Hunt Valley, MD.  The Foundation raises funds to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. 

Thompson Creek and its employees raised over $31,000 for this year’s Race for the Cure, bringing its three year total to almost $100,000 raised to help fund research to find a cure for breast cancer.

Because early detection is the best protection against breast cancer, Komen Maryland sponsors grants that increase the number of women who have annual mammograms and clinical breast exam screenings.  Komen grants also target the entire range of breast health services, from transportation to appointments and financial support to clinical trials and national research to find a cure.

For the third straight year, Thompson Creek Window Company is participating in the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Race for the Cure.  Being held Sunday, October 3, 2010, in Hunt Valley, MD, the Foundation raises funds to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. 

 

Over the last two years, Thompson Creek and its employees have raised over $63,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation Race for the Cure.  Last year, Team Thompson Creek came in second place for the state of Maryland with the highest total funds raised for the Race for the Cure.  We hope to surpass that amount this year!
