    April is Earth Month

    The first Earth Day began on April 22, 1970, by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson.  He wanted to raise awareness of environmental issues after a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, the year before.  That first Earth Day was a national teach-in on the environment, but 46 years later has turned into a month-long global effort to highlight the issues plaguing our planet.

    This month marks the ninth annual National Preparedness Month. Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the goal is to educate citizens on how to best prepare for emergencies such as national disasters, health epidemics, biological and chemical threats, and other emergencies. What if forecasters predict a hurricane to directly impact our area?  Will you be prepared to protect your home, family, pets, elderly neighbors?  There are a few steps you can take ahead of time to be prepared for any emergency that may arise.
